Demolition Process

The ACT Government, with the support of experienced licensed asbestos removalists and assessors, demolition contractors and with oversight from WorkSafe ACT, will safely demolish houses affected by Mr Fluffy loose fill asbestos in the next few years. After all asbestos has been removed (including any affected soil) and the house demolished, these properties will be removed from the Affected Residential Premises Register and offered for resale.

Just like a typical house demolition, the approach to each affected site is carefully planned and safety is the main priority for the workers on site, neighbours and the community.

Each site is overseen by a principal contractor with experienced licensed contractors undertaking the removal and demolition works. WorkSafe ACT will conduct compliance visits as required.


Removing an affected house will generally take around six weeks, which includes preparation, removal and remediation of the block. Whilst the timeline is highly dependant on the particular site conditions and the weather, a general guide is:

Program Engagement

Neighbours and surrounding residents will receive a letter from contractors providing information about the demolition process, as well as who to contact if you have any questions or would like more information. This letter may contain an indicative demolition date which is subject to weather conditions.
